Pak altered missiles to target India: US

SocialTwist Tell-a-Friend
The US has accused Pakistan of illegally modifying Americanmade missiles to expand its capability to strike land targets, a potential threat to India, according to senior US officials.

The charge, which set off a new outbreak of tensions between the US and Pakistan, was made in an unpublicised diplomatic protest in late June to the Prime Minister, Mr Yousaf Raza Gilani, and top Pakistani officials.

The accusation comes at a particularly delicate time, when the administration is asking Congress to approve $7.5 billion in aid to Pakistan over the next five years, and when Washington is pressing a reluctant Pakistani military to focus its attentions on fighting the Taliban, rather than expanding its nuclear and conventional forces aimed at India.

Pakistan rescues 200 kids being trained as suicide bombers

SocialTwist Tell-a-Friend
About 200 boys, some as young as six years, were rescued by Pakistani security forces from Taliban camps in the Swat valley where they were being "brainwashed" and trained to become suicide bombers.

The troops have kept the children in Mardan area where they will go through "mental rehabilitation" with the help of psychiatrists so that they can return to a normal life. The boys, whose age ranges between 6 and 13 years, have been so thoroughly "brainwashed" that they consider all others as "infidels", senior North West Frontier Province Minister Bashir Bilour was quoted as telling the Geo News channel. "These children have brainwashed in a way that now they even want to kill their own parents," he said, adding, however they were not administered any drugs.

Bilour said some children were pleased when they were handed over to their parents. But, a few days later, the parents came back with complaints that the boys are now threatening to "kill them", the report said.

First-time politicians most searched

SocialTwist Tell-a-Friend
In the last week, more people have searched online for Sanjay Dutt in Pakistan than in India. He is also virtually more popular in Bhopal than in Mumbai.

First-time politicians are grabbing more eyeballs virtually than young Turks. Google Trends shows that apart from political bigwigs, like L.K.Advani and Sonia Gandhi, new entrants are topping search lists. Shashi Tharoor, Chiranjeevi and Sanjay Dutt are among the top 10 most-searched politicians in the latest update.

Also on the list are Manmohan Singh, Mayawati, Narendra Modi, and Varun Gandhi.

Ghazal maestro Mehdi Hassan unable to pay medical bills

SocialTwist Tell-a-Friend
Even as Mehdi Hassan, the Pakistan-based ghazal maestro, looked set to be discharged from hospital, his family was worried about footing medical bills once he was back home.

Son Arif Mehdi, himself a singer, said the family’s income wasn’t enough to provide the kind of medical care that would be required for the legendary singer. Dawn TV quoted Arif as saying the family still had to pay about Rs 5 lakh to a private hospital on account of accommodation and treatment.

But Aga Khan Hospital spokesman Rasool Sarang told Hindustan Times they had treated the 82-year-old singer free of cost as a service to the nation. “He is our national hero and the hospital takes care of his expenses. Even his doctor does not charge him any money .”

Al Qaeda puts India on notice

SocialTwist Tell-a-Friend
Top Al Qaeda military commander Mustafa Abu Al Yazid, in a recently released video tape in the Arabic language, has warned India against any retaliatory attack on Pakistan.

The al Qaeda leader referred to the Mumbai terror attacks, saying the Indians suffered “humiliation” in the attack and more was in store if India decided to retaliate against Pakistan.

“India should know that it will have to pay a heavy price if it attacks Pakistan. The mujahideen will defeat Indian forces, like they did the Russians in Afghanistan. They will target your economic centres and raze them to the ground,” said Yazid.

Sonia invokes Indira to warn Pakistan: Don’t test our patience

SocialTwist Tell-a-Friend
Accusing Pakistan of aiding and abetting terrorist activities in India, Congress president Sonia Gandhi today invoked the name of former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, in an apparent reference to the 1971 war that led to the break-up of Pakistan and creation of Bangladesh, to send Islamabad a stern warning over its failure to act against terror.

“I have said it before and I am saying it again. Nobody should construe India’s patience as weakness. Those who are aiding and abetting terrorism from across the border will get a fitting reply. Our inspiration is Indiraji,” Gandhi said in her address at the national convention of district and block Congress committee presidents in New Delhi.

Her warning to Pakistan was accentuated by External Affairs Minister Pranab Mukherjee’s remark that “all our options are open”. Home Minister P Chidambaram reiterated the government’s policy of “zero tolerance” towards terrorism and also disapproved of those who think “Hindu militancy is the way to go and defend India”.

Claiming that the Congress is the “only party” that can fight against terrorism with support and strength from all sections of the society, Gandhi made a blistering attack on the BJP for seeking to make political capital out of terror by trying to “incite” public sentiments and by “deliberately” delaying important legislation's through disruptions in Parliament.

26/11 planning started a year ago, and we had the evidence

SocialTwist Tell-a-Friend
The planning for the November 26 terror attack started a year ago, and security agencies had evidence of it - nine maps plotting the attack sites recovered from a Lashkare-Tayyeba terrorist arrested in Uttar Pradesh on February 10. But the evidence was buried in a bulky chargesheet.

The story began in 2003 in Dubai, where Fahim Ansari, originally a resident of Goregaon (W), was looking for a job.

Fahim, already an activist of the banned Students' Islamic Movement of India, was spotted by a Lashkar recruiter Police sources said Fahim was indoctrinated and sent to Pakistan by sea. He was trained in Muzaffarabad, Pakistan-occupied Kashmir, in handling computers and arms.

Sonia helps Pak boy undergo liver transplant in Delhi

SocialTwist Tell-a-Friend
A month ago, fourteen-year-old Mobeen Ahmed, the son of a Lahore cook, was admitted to the Indraprastha Apollo Hospital in Delhi. He was lethargic, undernourished and down with liver cirrhosis. Today, the boy left Delhi with a healthy liver after a successful transplant and dreams of becoming a cricketer. But before he set out for Pakistan, he said a big thank-you to the one person who helped him out — UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi.

On being told about Mobeen’s love for cricket and movies, Gandhi gifted him a cricket kit and CDs of Shahrukh Khan movies. Asked what sort of help did she extend, Gandhi’s office did not go into details except to say it was monetary assistance.

“We don’t know if this is a big or small move, we only hope it contributes to smoothening ties between the two countries. We usually try and help anyone we can but in this case the child was quite unwell and had come a long way from Pakistan, hoping for better health.

Pakistan using US anti-terror funds to prepare for war against India: Obama

SocialTwist Tell-a-Friend
Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama has said that Pakistan is using US aid meant for the war on terror to “prepare for a war against India”. He will hold Islamabad accountable for these massive funds and increase pressure to bust terrorist safe havens if he becomes President, Obama said on Fox News.

“What we can do is stay focused on Afghanistan and put more pressure on the Pakistanis,” Obama said, adding the US was providing Pakistan military aid “without having enough strings attached”.

“So they’re using the military aid... Pakistan... They’re preparing for a war against India.

“What we say is, look, we’re going to provide them with additional military support, targeted at terrorists, and we’re going to help build their democracy.... We’ve wasted 10 billion dollars with Musharraf without holding them accountable for knocking out those safe havens.”

HE’S GONE

SocialTwist Tell-a-Friend
The sober grey suit and tie were just right for the occasion. It was Pervez Musharraf ’s last day in office as president of Pakistan. He addressed the nation in a televised speech, took the guard of honour for one last time and left.

The former general’s future is a matter of wild speculation here in Pakistan and abroad: Where will he go? What will he do? And there are no answers at the moment, only choices and options.

Analysts believe that Musharraf has gone as part of a deal, overseen by the Pakistan Army, which will not allow its former chief to be humiliated.

Senate Chairman Mohammedmian Soomro assumed the office of acting president later in the day. A full-time successor will have to be named within the next four months according to the constitution.

Musharraf wants to go down fighting

SocialTwist Tell-a-Friend
Pakistan President Pervez Musharraf may be counting his days in office but wants to go down fighting.

“He won’t resign and will defend himself”, said a senior official at the Presidency on Sunday night. But the political pundits continue to believe he will have to quit.

“If he doesn’t resign, it will be one more mistake (by him). He knows, the government has enough numbers to vote him out in case of impeachment,” a political commentator said.

For a successful impeachment, 295 members of the National Assembly and the Senate must vote against the President and the ruling parties claim to have support of over 300 members.

The government on Sunday finalised the charge sheet against President Musharraf which will be forwarded to the leaders of the coalition for a final approval on Monday.

Talking to media after a meeting of the coalition partners, information minister Sherry Rehman said that impeachment motion would be tabled in the National Assembly on Tuesday and added that Mr Musharraf could resign according to Article 44 of the Constitution before being impeached.

Pakistan opens fire at Line of Control, 1 jawan dead

SocialTwist Tell-a-Friend
The Army said on Monday that Pakistani troops had crossed the Line of Control in Kupwara district and killed an Indian soldier in a brief clash. The corpse of the slain soldier is yet to be retrieved, and he has not been identified as yet. This was described by a defence official as a major ceasefire violation.

In New Delhi, Army sources said the forces were in a state of high preparedness. “We have asked for a flag meeting with the Pakistan Army, but are ready to deal with any situation,” they added.

A defence spokesperson in Srinagar said 10 to 12 Pakistani troops were involved: “They crossed the LoC at Kaiyan Bull in Nawgam sector at 3.30 pm and asked our jawans to dismantle a picket.” There was an altercation, in which the Pakistanis shot at an Indian soldier, “who fell down in a deep ditch and died.”

The spokesperson, Lt.Col. Anil Kumar Mathur, added that though Indian troops retaliated by returning fire, the Pakistanis managed to return to their area.

Movie inspired blast plot?

SocialTwist Tell-a-Friend
The Perpetrators of the Saturday blasts that have claimed 46 lives so far seem to have been distinctly influenced by the plot of Contract, directed by Ram Gopal Varma - which released 10 days ago - police sources told HT.

In the film, the main villain, Sultan, outlines his plan of first setting off low-intensity explosions in crowded places, and then, when the injured throng the nearest hospital, triggering a much bigger blast at the hospital itself.

In Ahmedabad too, there were 19 relatively less lethal blasts at first, which saw the injured being rushed to hospitals. These were followed by two deadly high-intensity explosions at two hospitals - the Civil Hospital and the LG Hospital - that killed 27 people.

"The modus operandi was unique," Ashish Bhatia, Joint Commissioner of Police (Crime) told HT, confirming the strategy .

Forensic and counter-terrorism experts of the Gujarat police were engaged in investigations on Sunday even as the blasts saw a high , alert being sounded in several states across the country Prime Minister Manmohan Singh .

Bin Laden warns EU over Prophet cartoons

SocialTwist Tell-a-Friend
Al Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden threatened the European Union with grave punishment on Wednesday for publication of cartoons mocking Islam's Prophet Mohammad.

In an audio recording posted on the Internet coinciding with the birthday of Islam's founder, bin Laden said the drawings, considered offensive by Muslims, were part of a "new crusade" in which Pope Benedict was involved.

"Your publications of these drawings -- part of a new crusade in which the Pope of the Vatican had a significant role -- is a confirmation from you that the war continues," said the Saudi-born militant leader, addressing "those who are wise at the European Union".

You are "testing Muslims ... the answer will be what you shall see and not what you hear."

It was bin Laden's first message since November 29 when he urged Europe to end participation with U.S. forces in Afghanistan.

The message, produced by al Qaeda media arm As-Sahab in the lunar month which ended on March 8, carried an animation of a spear piercing through a red map of Europe with blood splashing as its tip penetrated the surface.

It also carried what appeared to be an old picture of bin Laden firing an assault rifle. The message also coincides with the fifth anniversary of the U.S.-led invasion of Iraq.

Michael Scheuer, a former CIA bin Laden tracker, said: "It's not a coincidence that it was released on the day that is observed in the Muslim world as the Prophet's birthday."

He added: "It's only ominous when he says 'don't listen to our words, watch for our actions' ... that means they clearly are intending to attack in Europe."

THREAT AGAINST EUROPE

The U.S.-based IntelCenter, a terrorism monitoring firm, said the message was "a clear threat against EU member countries and an indicator of a possible upcoming significant attack, however, it is unclear in exactly what timeframe it may occur."

Bin Laden said the publication of the cartoons was a graver offence than the "bombing of modest villages that collapsed over our women children", in reference to U.S.-led invasion of Iraq and Afghanistan with European participation. "This is the bigger catastrophe ... for which the punishment is graver."

"Animosity among people is very old but wise people ... have always been keen on maintaining the manners of disagreement and the ethics of fighting ... but you have abandoned many of these ethics although you use them as slogans," he said.

Bin Laden said Europe was intentionally targeting Muslim women and children at the behest of their "unjust ally who is close to departing the White house".

He said "brutality" had not defeated Muslims and made them determined to "avenge our folk and eject the invaders from out countries."

A U.S. counterterrorism official said the authenticity of the recording was under examination but added it was in line with "al Qaeda's ongoing propaganda effort."

The cartoons were first published by the Danish daily Jyllands-Posten in September 2005 but a furor erupted only after other newspapers reprinted them in 2006.

CARTOONS

On February 13 several Danish newspapers published one of the cartoons in solidarity with the cartoonist after three men were arrested on suspicion of plans to kill him.

One of the cartoons shows a man described as Islam's prophet wearing a turban with a bomb in its folds.

At least 50 people were killed in the protests against the cartoons, which Muslims say are an affront to Islam. Newspapers which printed them say they are defending media freedom.

Sajjan Gohel of the Asia-Pacific Foundation, a London-based security think-tank, said the message did not necessarily signal an imminent attack in Europe but was a "statement of intent".

"A bin Laden message doesn't necessitate countries in Europe increasing their threat levels. The reason why they would do that is based on actual intelligence," he said.

"But when Osama bin Laden talks, people listen -- his supporters and constituents throughout the world are motivated by his words and want to turn them into action... Europe has become the battleground for al Qaeda."

European countries singled out by al Qaeda in the past include Britain, Spain, Italy and Denmark. The new message is likely to cause particular concern to Denmark.

Bin Laden's attempt to stoke Christian-Muslim tensions, by evoking the crusades, also comes as the Netherlands braces for the expected release on March 28 of a film about Islam by a right-wing politician who has called the Koran a "fascist" book.

Tensions over the film prompted the Dutch to raise their terrorism threat level earlier this month.

Bin Laden, the man behind the September 11 attacks on U.S. cities, issued several messages late in 2007 after a hiatus of well over a year raised speculation that he might be dead.

Bin Laden, believed to be in remote areas between Pakistan and Afghanistan, often marks significant events with messages.

On September 7 bin Laden appeared in a video marking the sixth anniversary of the September 11 attacks and said the United States remained vulnerable despite its economic and military power.

Spinners tighten grip on Pakistan

SocialTwist Tell-a-Friend
Pakistan won the toss and elected to bat first in the first One-Day International against India in Guwahati on Monday.

After ensuring a solid start, Pakistan lost the wicket of Kamran Akmal in the 11th over when Irfan Pathan broke through for India by trapping him in front of the stumps. In fact, Zaheer Khan struggled a little bit with his line and length in the initial stages of the match as the Pakistan batsmen, particularly Salman Butt, helped himself to a couple of boundaries while from the other end R P Singh bowled a good line and length.
The introduction of one change bowler Irfan Pathan further tightened the visitor’s run rate as the new batsman Younis Khan found runs hard to come by.From the other end Butt was gaining in confidence and completed his quick-fire fifty. However, soon after reaching his half-century, he was run out after a mix-up with Younis, as Pakistan fell to 69 for two. Pakistan opened with their wicketkeeper-batsman Kamran Akmal and regular opener Salman Butt while India opened their bowling with the left arm duo of Zaheer Khan and Rudra Pratap Singh.India rested Praveen Kumar, Rohit Sharma and S.Sreesanth from the playing eleven while Pakistan left out Sohail Tanvir, Imran Nazir and Fawad Alam from the eleven.
