The Nano effect: Laptop for Rs 500
The Nano effect seems to Shiv Kumar have rubbed off on the government. The central gov ernment is working on a project to manufacture a laptop which would cost as less as $10, or Rs 500, akin to Ratan Tata's ambitious Rs 1 lakh car.
"We are working towards developing the cheapest lap top in the world. The government is coordinating with institutions of technical and higher education on the project," D Purandareswari, minister of state for human resource development (HRD), said, adding: "Work is in its last stages, and we would soon be able to launch the low cost laptop."
The government had been approached by some private sector players with plans to sell laptops for $100, but even that would saddle the government with additional subsidy burden, the minister said.
