BPO Industry under the scanner
Now with the British sting operation going to be telecast on Channel 4, UK an Indian retrospection is essential.
The Uk TV Channel crew seems to have got over a thousand Creditcard details as well as other confidential information from an Indian BPO Staff. They also have a report from the Birtish Banking Codes Standards(BBCS) that gave a clean chit on the Data security Front to the BPOs that deal with the UK Banks.
There would certainly be a sense of outrage among the public, especially when such sensitive information is so easily up for sale. But motive of the sting too would be questioned.
As in Prem Karnik, Nasscom Chief's words 'What do you call a sting operation that has tried to induce criminal activity and then make a show of it. It's like creating a story and then printing it'.
It's learnt that the tainted employee was given more than 200,000 for passing on the sensitive information.
It's said that comparing the data security frauds here with the percentages of Bank & Data security frauds in the US & Europe this is normal or even much less. Therefore its alleged that this second sting operation could be an attempt to malign the Indian Service Industry.
However everything said and done, the Indian IT/ITES Industry needs to start working on more stringent measures. Though there's sure going to a few bad apples in every Industry but here its got to be minimal. In the coming days its sure going to be a tight-rope walk for the BPOs, especially considering the increasing opposition in the countries of their Business providers.
